A Late 19th Century Wax Doll USA.
Germany, Switzerland, and France were the principal manufacturers of toys in the 19th century, but the manufacture of the wax doll was a specialty of England.The wax is over a paper mache or composition. Their features were painted before they were covered with wax. You will find a variation of dates as to manufacture, but the average is circa 1830 through 1860's.
This lovely lady is 43cms/17 inches, her head is wax over composition, with fixed glass eyes without pupils and original mohair wig which is in good condition, her forehead has a bump which was meant to give a lift to the hair in front.
Her body is a simple crude cotton stuffed with sawdust, and her hands and feet are composition. No maker’s name as you’d expect but believed to be USA manufactured.. the dress she is wearing is a replacement copied from her original which is silk and falling apart now, it will be sent with her however. Her underwear is all original white cotton with lace trim, and hair net with ribbons is also original, all are clean and bright. No cracks to the wax that I can see. Her black laceup boots are replacements. She wears a vintage bead necklace meant to be pearls I imagine, altogether a nice example and very collectable.
