The wax dolls of the 18th and 19th centuries are my great favourites what
stories they could tell. Standing 27"/70cm being a wax shoulder head with old
straw stuffed body. Paper-mache support under the wax. Head is all intact but
shows age wear and scuffs with some lines in the wax, this is perfectly acceptable
in this type of doll and best left as it is. She has the classic simple wooden hands
and carved wood legs with painted shoes, her crude oil cloth body is somewhat the
worse for wear it is patched and mended in places, she now has a cotton cover over it.
Her earrings are original green glass. Set plain black glass eyes, A wonderfully
elegant expression on her face. Original curly hair covered with original hair net.
Her garments are replacements, they are very fitting for this special Lady
being heavily embellished silks and lace, she carries her tiny white lace fan and
pouch purse which matches her dress with aplomb and grace. Circa early 1800s.
The manufacture of the wax doll was a specialty of England. Paper mache or
composition dipped in wax which proved to be remarkably resilient as the many tomb
portraits that survive prove. Their features were painted before they were covered
with wax. You will find a variation of dates as to manufacture, but the average is
circa 1830 through 1860's
A real TREASURE for a collection! This doll would look wonderful on display!
