A beautiful doll with a wax over composition head on a cloth body with dainty
wooden limbs.
She is what is referred to as a Pumpkin Head or Squash head doll. Next to
china-head dolls, the most popular type during the last half of the nineteenth
century was the doll with a head of thick or of thin wax over a papier-mache
reinforcement.
She is over 140 years old. Manufactured in Germany possibly. She has glass inset
eyes they have no pupils as was normal with this type of doll.
Wax over head has no crazing and lifting or missing wax and no
evidence of repairs or major damage but very slight damage to the edge of the
shoulder plate. Painted features, beautiful molded hairstyle with deep comb
marks yellow blonde with a black band. Her sawdust stuffed body has a cotton
band added around the waist line possibly to add support,
other than that she is in original condition
She has wooden feet with orange painted boots and hands so that would date her
to 1850-1860. they are completely out of proportion being slim and fine.
The right lower leg and boot has scratches down the paint work.
Her dress may be original I have no way of knowing, it is certainly of old
fine type cotton. She also wears a white cotton slips and pantaloons edged
in lovely old lace all in freshly laundered condition.
