A paper mache Headed Doll on an oil cloth straw stuffed body with Composition arms. She was manufactured probably
in the USA possibly by an immigrant German doll maker, circe 1880s and is unmarked.
Her head and shoulder plate and hands have been refurbished much of the original paint work has been retained especially her feathered eye brows always a feature of these beautiful dolls, fixed bright blue oval glass eyes with eye lashes, and closed rosebud lips, dimpled chin and blushing cheeks. I believe her to be one of the Patent Washable" shoulderheads Her body with its red stitched in stockings and tiny black paten boots are all original, and completely out of proportion as was the usual case in that era, there is some light scuffing to the boots.
Standing 31 inches/79cm she is huge with a very imposing presence and loads of expression. Her full curly wig is a replacement for the hair she would have had glued into the hole in the top of the head.
She is wearing a hand tailored outfit in the early "Victorian" little girl style, a silk burgundy skirt with pleated border defined with lace edging, over white soft cotton underwear. Her matching jacket of cream flannel with a tiny sprig pattern is trimmed with the same material as her skirt,
The back of the jacket has four pointed flaps, the whole costume is then richly decorated with antique ecru lace down the front of the jacket, and culminating in a beautiful cream lace apron. Her high poke bonnet is a picture of high Victorian fashion covered over all with ecru lace. She carries a tiny tapestry purse with hanky and her own little teddy bear for company.
