A delightful paper mache headed doll on an oil cloth elongated body with Composition arms and legs, 18inch/46cm. thumb is missing off right hand. Possibly manufactured in the USA after the German style she has bright blue glass fixed eyes with feathered eyebrows, she has a hole in the top of her head where the hair would originally been glued in, she now has a pretty blonde wig.
No identifying marks but would appear to date from around 1880s by the turn of the century most (if not all) of the American papier mache doll factories were closed. It was German immigrants who introduced the art of papier mache doll making to America during the mid 19th century. It is believed that many doll makers came to America from Germany will the sole intention of producing papier mache dolls it is curious that this was the material of choice for so many German immigrants who chose to set up doll making factories in America. Perhaps it was because the high quality clay for bisque dolls was only to be found in the Black Forest region of Germany.
Dressed in an old soft pink cotton muslin robe edged with delicate lace which is in fairly good condition but slightly faded. White bodice, underskirt and replacement pantaloons.
She is priced well below the normal value for a doll of this type.
